    TREATING TEEN DEPRESSION
    By Tess Thompson

Transient depressive feelings are common in teens and in adults as well. There are
numerous reasons that induce such transient feelings and they usually go away on their
own as one realizes that life must go on. While serious incidents like death or problems
with work give rise to such feelings in adults, children, especially teens tend to get
depressed over seemingly petty events like not being able to make it to a school
    sports team.

The present day competitive environment is probably the root cause of child depression.
In the race to reach to the top we have probably ignored that our children need our help
    at every step.

The pressures of modern day society and lack of parental support are primary causes
behind teen depression too. Like depression in adults, teen depression, in its extreme
manifestation, can potentially end up in suicide. Parents are prone to live in misplaced
complacency under the belief that they have discharged their duties by providing enough
material comforts to their child. Even though material comforts matter they are only a
small part of bringing up children.

Teen depression help involves identification of the problem and acceptance of the
condition. Parents tend to avoid accepting that their teen has a tendency to get
depressed and needs help. Since such a condition in their child is difficult for them to
accept, they tend to ignore the situation, blame others or lash out on each other.

Though asking teenagers to pull themselves up and solve what is disturbing them may
work in the case of mild depression, it may prove disastrous in the case of clinical
depression. Teens cannot decide whether they need treatment or not. And therefore
it is the duty of the parent to identify the level of help required.

Early detection and timely attention to the problem can prove to be really helpful. If the
child is being traumatized by something that he has forced himself into believing, patience
and skillful handling at home or by a therapist may be required.

In most of the mild cases of teen depression, family therapy usually helps to get teens
out of the melancholic, despondent or hopeless state. Severe cases would require
specialist treatments that may involve a psychiatrist and medication.

Unless it is genetic or hereditary in nature, teen depression is easily treatable. A keen
observance of behavioral changes in teens is an important requisite for treating teen
depression. It is important for parents to be aware of the general signs of depression in
teens so that they can provide timely help. If not attended to in time, depression can have
serious long term implications and may give rise to thoughts of suicide. Teen depression
is legitimate and therefore deserves the same attention and sympathy as any other
    physiological disease.
